CNN: Obama Up 7 Is Great For McCain!

A new CNN poll (914 RVs, July 27-29, MOE +/- 3%) shows Barack Obama in solid shape, 7 points ahead of John McCain among registered voters (June numbers in parentheses.)

Obama 51 (50)
McCain 44 (45)

I mean, that looks good to you, right? Obama's above 50%, he's moving up while McCain is moving down and he's gone from within the MOE to outside of it. All good things, right?

Not so fast. Apparently there is much to be concerned about indeed.

Here's CNN headline:

Obama trip abroad doesn't move poll numbers

Oh no! And from their...er...analysis...

...the race for the White House has remained virtually unchanged since late June...

Now, to be fair, I suspect the CNN headline refers specifically to Obama's numbers on "foreign policy issues."

"Did Obama's trip help his standing with the public on foreign policy issues? Not really," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said. "Obama has not picked up any ground against McCain on foreign issues and some 52 percent think McCain would do a better job than Obama on the war in Iraq -- virtually the same number who felt that way in April."

Except that, since way back in April the primary was still in full swing, there is only one issue that they polled both then and now:

Who would better handle Iraq? (April results in parentheses)

McCain 52 (53)
Obama 45 (44)

And really, considering we don't know how Obama and McCain polled on the issue prior to his trip, can we really conclude anything vis a vis the impact of his trip on this result? No, of course not. But acknowledging that wouldn't quite fit into their narrative.

It is true that McCain polls better than Obama on issues such as Afghanistan (+10%), terrorism (+15%), the Middle East (+7%) and Iran (+7%) but considering CNN's June poll found that the economy topped voters' concerns with 42% whereas Iraq and terrorism were far back at 24% and 11% respectively, perhaps this isn't as big a concern for Barack as CNN is making it out to be. In fact, perhaps McCain's the one who should be worried, since in July Obama polls better on jobs (+ 19%), economy (+11%), gas prices (+11%) and even taxes (+6%.) Really, which guy would you rather be in this scenario.

I'd respectfully argue that in an attempt to jump on the "what impact did Obama's trip have on his poll numbers" bandwagon, CNN buried the lede. This from the article's 8th paraqgraph:

The poll suggests few of the McCain campaign's criticisms of Obama's trip have stuck, especially charges Obama was presumptuously acting as if he had already won the election and claims he nixed a visit with injured troops because members of the media could not accompany him.

Look at these numbers and then tell me whose candidacy we should really be concerned about:

Is Obama Arrogant?
Yes 37%
No 63%

Does Obama Care About Veterans and Troops in Iraq?
Yes 72%
No 27%

Is Obama Acting as if He Has Already Won the Election?
Yes 44%
No 56%

But the media wants this thing to be a dead heat and so a dead heat they will make it. I wonder, though, how far Obama needs to be ahead before there's finally some good news for him.

They did this before I think - the first GE poll that they did showed a bounce which Obama has hung onto.  The headline was about Obama's gap with suburban white women.

Dump him now (none / 0)

wow, this poll is more proof that we need to dump Obama and dump him now.  Look we still have time before Denver.

Sorry, I was just trying to be snarky, but I guess it missed.  I am just tired of all the naysayers who are claiming that because Obama is not up by 20 points that he is a failure.

I have said it before and I will say it again, 42-45% of the American public is going to vote GOP for President no matter what (baring a Perot like 3rd party).  The fact that Obama is starting to exceed 50% in some early polls is huge.   Anyone who thinks that any Democrat would be leading by 15-20% is smoking something very strong.

Nobody really thinks that (none / 0)

it's just a rouse. It's human nature to do everything you can to prove you were right, even when you're not. It's not in many people's interest to see Obama win. It would mean they were wrong about him being unelectable, which was the only argument they could make to get Clinton nominated.

It's why I implore people not to get complacent. Come October an imminent Obama win means many in his own party, I'm talking voters, might stab him in the back.

Evil Cookie Ad (none / 0)

That is a pretyy evil cookie ad.   I had been looking at flights from Atlanta to Amarillo so that is what the Orbitz ad here is showing.

When Nader and Barr are counted, Obama's lead shrink to 4%.

Third parties' shares invariably shrink as the election approaches.  That's why they're seldom polled.

Which is funny (none / 0)

considering in every other poll I saw, when Nader and Barr are polled, Obama's lead actually grew.

There's another new poll with the same Obama lead, +7. It's the Economist/You Gov poll and it's listed in the national chart at pollster.com. The link takes you to a LONG pdf.  Oh, and the margin improved from +3.

51% is amazing (2.00 / 1)

The last Democrat to get more than 51% of the vote was Lyndon Johnson in 1964.  Since then, the best we have done is 50.1% in 1976.

So to have any Democrat at 51% is an incredible feat.   I realize that this is just a poll, but it is still very good news

What's funny about the arrogant poll (none / 0)

Is that McCain polled 34% Yes, 66% No. Essentially identical.

So much for that sticking.

Once again pick the poll you like... (none / 0)

...and throw the rest away. Bloggers apparently do that a lot..rational, rational, rational.

Re: CNN: Obama Up 7 Is Great For McCain! (2.00 / 1)

I remember something interesting from back in 1992.  I used to car pool with a guy that listened to the news on the radio.  There was a certain rhythm to the pols as reported.  Monday Clinton would be ahead by 5%, as the week went on Bush would be narrowing the gap, by Friday the news guy would report that Bush was almost caught up.  Then Monday would come around an Clinton would be ahead by 5%.

What the news guys were doing was cherry picking pols to show Bush gaining on Clinton, hoping to get a bandwagon effect going. And I suppose hoping that people would forget the numbers over the weekend.  It was pretty much rinse lather repeat all the way to the erection, which Bush lost by 5%

"Its all over!" doesn't sell ad time (none / 0)

and it doesn't win ratings which drives ad placement rates -- especially if "ITS ALL OVER!" happens even before the conventions let alone November.

They're being desperately self-serving with this dead-heat nonsense, that's all.

Re: CNN: Obama Up 7 Is Great For McCain! (none / 0)

What's even funnier is that in this same poll in June with the results being O - 50, M -45, CNN called it a "statistical dead heat" (http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/200 8/07/01/new-cnn-poll-obama-mccain-in-a-s tatistical-dead-heat/). The margin is now 7 and CNN says that "Obama trip abroad doesn't move poll numbers". So I guess then by CNN's analysis, Obama leading 51 - 44 is a "statistical dead heat"? *shakes head at the media's spin*

by newms on Wed Jul 30, 2008 at 11:53:36 PM EST

how far Obama needs to be ahead (none / 0)

As long as he's ahead at all and we don't have listen to "I told ya so!" from the you-know-whos, I'm happy.

Re: CNN: Obama Up 7 Is Great For McCain! (none / 0)

I can see CNN's headline on Jan. 20 2009:

OBAMA SWORN IN - MCCAIN CLOSING FAST.

by Glaurung on Thu Jul 31, 2008 at 12:33:15 AM EST

This is the most interesting aspect (none / 0)

"Forty percent say he (McCain) is attacking Obama unfairly, while only 22 percent say Obama is unfairly attacking McCain,"

That is essentially a likability ratio. Gore and Kerry always trailed in that question and I knew it was ominous. When people like you they never want to believe anything you've done is unfair.

Obama's 22% is incredibly low. I'm not sure I've seen anything in that range for a major politician this deep into a race. Remarkable teflon. If percentages like that hold, or at least the relationship to each other, Obama will cruise.

Re: CNN: Obama Up 7 Is Great For McCain! (none / 0)

Why does the liberal blogosphere get so cranky when the media downplays or ignores Obama's lead?  Who cares?  The lead is what it is.  Lots of liberals also worry that Obama is under-performing, but again, why does that hurt Obama?  I guess it's kind of annoying because it's dumb, but if the point is that the media's election coverage is dumb, there are about three hundred more annoying examples every day.
